Every design is laser-cut from 4mm basswood plywood, printed with fade-resistant inks, and shipped in an eco-friendly wooden gift box. The pieces have weight in your hand. They click softly when they meet. And when the puzzle is done, the finished piece is sturdy enough to lift, frame, and display on a wall.

Opus Puzzles was founded in 2026 by Simon I., who designs and runs the studio from Denver, Colorado. The brand started with a simple frustration. A cardboard jigsaw is fun once, maybe twice, and then it bends, fades, and ends up in a recycling bin. A wooden puzzle is different. It can sit on a shelf for years, get pulled out for a quiet weekend, and be solved again by a different pair of hands. It can be a hobby, a gift, a small piece of art, or all three.

How We Make Every Wooden Puzzle

Each Opus Puzzles wooden puzzle begins with art. We work with illustrators to design pieces that hold up at small scale, where every color and line ends up on a single laser-cut piece of wood. Once the art is final, we print it directly onto sheets of 4mm basswood plywood using UV-cured inks. The inks bond with the wood grain, so colors stay rich for years and do not fade in a sunny room.

From there, the sheets go to the laser. The laser cuts irregular edges and unique whimsy pieces, then carves the interior shapes. Every piece is hand-inspected, lightly sanded where needed, and packed into a wooden gift box sealed in protective plastic. The box doubles as long-term storage. Slide it onto a shelf when you are not building, and pull it back out next season.

Why Basswood

Basswood (also called linden wood) is the right material for laser-cut puzzles for a few simple reasons. The grain is fine and consistent, so the laser cuts a clean edge with very little char. The wood is light enough to lift in one finished piece but stable enough to resist warping in a dry winter room or a humid summer one. And because basswood takes ink so cleanly, the printed art looks crisp from edge to edge.

Other shops cut puzzles from cheaper plywood or MDF. Those pieces feel rough in your hand. They fray at the laser-cut edges. They warp over time. We use basswood because it costs more and it lasts longer. The few extra dollars in materials are why an Opus Puzzles wooden puzzle still feels good to build ten years from now.

Every puzzle hides between five and twenty whimsy pieces, depending on the size. Whimsy pieces are pieces cut into shapes that match the design. Builders tell us they slow down on purpose just to find them all. That is the point.

Meet the Founder

Opus Puzzles is the work of its founder, Simon I., who started the studio in Denver, Colorado, in 2026. The idea was personal. Simon kept buying cardboard puzzles for family game nights, and they never lasted. You finish one, and before long it is creased, faded, or missing a piece. He wanted the opposite. A puzzle that could come out every holiday and still feel new.

That goal shapes every Opus Puzzles wooden puzzle. These are built to be played more than once. A quiet evening on your own. A project the whole family builds together over a long weekend.
